 What do you think???
Friday, August 6th, 2010

Today, we present some great information in anticipation of the launch of the recording: personal thoughts from the performer, Aubrey Foard, as well as program notes written by composer Mark Petering.

Aubrey Foard's thoughts on the Petering Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra:

"The creation, recording, release, and eventual live performances of this concerto are something of a dream come true for me. As most tubists will tell you, there are a large number of works available for tuba soloist with orchestra, but, for various reasons, most don't receive more than one performance (if they're that lucky!). A small handful have survived well enough to make it into the modern repertory - these include works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edward Gregson and John Williams - but the selection is minimal at best. I've always wanted to see that change.

"I was lucky enough to get to know and work with Mark Petering through a connection my parents have with him and luckier still that he was willing to take a remarkably collaborative approach when writing the work. My biggest goal as a performer was to create a concerto that was both musically satisfying to play, but also accessible and enjoyable from the listener's perspective. As a final element - and this is where my instincts as a teacher kicked in - I wanted the concerto to be something that aspiring student musicians would tackle during their formative years.

"Mark brought together all of these aspects within the concerto in a way that I couldn't be happier with. It's an incredibly heartfelt effort that connects with everyone that has heard it so far. You might not hear a catchy tune at every moment in the piece, but what I think you will feel is a deep attraction to the emotional messages conveyed throughout.

"I invite you to contact me at anytime to discuss the concerto further by using the 'Contact' link at the top of the page. Enjoy!"

About the conductor, Maxim Eshkenazy:

Picture
For Maxim Eshkenazy, the 2010/2011 season marks the inception of Fortissimo Fest, where he will serve as a Music Director. The newly founded festival, underwritten entirely by the America For Bulgaria Foundation, will take place in his home town of Sofia, Bulgaria and will include most of the major Bulgarian orchestras as well as orchestras and soloists from the United States. The Fortissimo Fest will be a cultural bridge builder and Mr. Eshkenazy is very excited to be the integral link and ambassador for the arts between the two nations.

Maxim Eshkenazy will be returning to the Pacific Symphony summer concerts with an interesting project in which two art forms form a symbiotic partnership. Last season, his début with Pacific Symphony in collaboration with Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation saw record-breaking attendance of more than fifteen thousand.

In the upcoming season, Mr. Eshkenazy will continue to serve as Music Director and Conductor of the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra. 2011 will mark the first ever tour of the orchestra to Bulgaria. There, they will perform three concerts in the cities of Varna, Plovdiv and Sofia. Last year, with Bakersfield Youth Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Eshkenazy completed a successful tour to South Korea, which was received well by the audience and the press alike.

As Assistant Conductor of the Pacific Symphony, Maxim will continue to be involved in and conduct The Family Music Mornings, and Class Act Youth Concerts, education programs of Pacific Symphony that educate more than twenty five thousand children a year. Mr. Eshkenazy is exceedingly proud of these projects.

At The Colburn School, Mr. Eshkenazy will be the interim Music Director and Conductor for the Colburn Chamber Orchestra in addition to his duties as an assistant conductor to Maestro Yehuda Gilad of The Colburn Orchestra. Part of The Colburn Orchestra will be traveling with Mr. Eshkenazy at his festival Fortissimo Fest in September of 2010.

Maxim lives in a small bungalow not far from the Pacific Ocean in Southern California with his dog Bella and is a licensed pilot working towards an additional license in flying helicoptors.

About the composer of the concerto, Dr. Mark Petering:
Picture
Mark D. Petering (b. 1973, Milwaukee, WI) is a composer whose music has been described as “compelling . . . built of interesting textures . . . clever and vivid . . .” (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel). The recipient of honors and awards from organizations such as ASCAP, National Federation of Music Clubs, and National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, he has won the Swan Composer Prize for wind ensemble – for The Swimming Pool, a work influenced by the Matisse mural – and the Music Festival of the Hamptons Composition Contest – for Train & Tower for chamber orchestra and tape. In July 2003, Mr. Petering and conductor Lukas Foss made music history as they coordinated the performance of this latter piece with a donated Long Island Rail Road train at the festival grounds in Bridgehampton, Long Island, New York, an event which was covered by The New York Times, NPR, and the BBC.

Performances of Petering’s music have taken place across the United States, in Turkey and Eastern Europe. His acoustic works have been played by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra; Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra; Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra; Czech National Symphony; Atlantic Chamber Orchestra; and Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra; University
of Minnesota Wind Ensemble; and have been presented at the Washington Island and Aspen Music Festivals as well as the Music Festival of the Hamptons. His electronic compositions have been heard in Istanbul, Bucharest, Brooklyn, New York City, Minnesota, and Ohio. Commissions for Petering’s work have come from organizations such as the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra League, Washington Island Music Festival, PieperPower Foundation; and individuals, including first violinist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Jason De Pue, Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Malin Fritz, and pianist Jacob Surdell. Mark Petering’s music is recorded on the Albany, Capstone, and Zebrina Records labels.

A member of ASCAP and Director of Music Theory/Composition and Technology at Carthage College, one hour north of Chicago, Mark Petering has served as guest composer of the Washington Island Music Festival and has participated in the Aspen Music Festival, where he studied with George Tsontakis. At the University of Minnesota, from which he received his Ph.D. in composition, he studied with Judith Lang Zaimont. (Petering’s doctoral dissertation is the first American concerto for Bayan [Russian accordion], written for Bayanist Stas Venglevski). A graduate of Luther College (B.A.) and Bowling Green State University (M.M.), Petering’s teachers have included Samuel Adler, Burton Beerman Wallace Depue, John Downey, and Marilyn Shrude, among others. In his spare time, he enjoys watercolor and lithography, as well as swimming, basketball and golf.
